What's Poe Switch?

PoE switch is a network switch that help transmit both data and power over the same Ethernet cable. It can power-up devices such as wireless access points, network cameras, and IP phones, additional power lines is unnecessary. This simplifies cabling, reduces costs, and facilitates installation. This switch, a type of power-sink device, has built-in PoE functionality and complies with IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at standards, safely supplying power to powered devices.

This unique "one-wire data and power" capability significantly simplifies cabling, reduces installation and maintenance costs, and increases network flexibility.

Working Principle:

PoE switches and powered devices negotiate power supply according to a strict set of IEEE standards to ensure safety:

PD Detection: The PoE switch outputs a low voltage on its port to detect the presence of a PoE-capable PD at the end of the cable.

PD Classification/Power Negotiation: If a PD is detected, both parties perform power classification to determine the maximum power required by the PD. The PoE switch then supplies only the precise amount of power required.

Power Start: After successful negotiation, the PoE switch begins supplying stable DC power (typically 48V) to the PD. Power Outage/Monitoring: During power supply, the PoE switch continuously monitors the current. If a PD is disconnected or an abnormality such as overload or short circuit occurs, the PoE switch immediately stops supplying power to ensure device safety.

Key Advantages:

Simplified Wiring and Installation: No separate power cables are required for end devices (such as cameras and access points). A single network cable can handle both data and power, significantly reducing the number of cables and wiring complexity.

Reduced Costs: Save the cost of purchasing and installing power outlets, power cables, and electricians.

Flexible Deployment: Devices can be installed anywhere a network cable can reach, unrestricted by traditional power outlet locations. This makes them particularly suitable for difficult-to-reach locations like ceilings and high walls.

Centralized Power Management and Maintenance: Power is centrally provided by the PoE switch, enabling unified remote restart, power management, and scheduled power supply functions for easier maintenance and troubleshooting.

High Safety and Reliability: The power supply complies with international standards, uses low-voltage DC power, and features intelligent power protection mechanisms to effectively prevent risks such as short circuits and overloads.

Application Scenarios for PoE Switches:

Security Surveillance Systems: Power and transmit data for remote, outdoor, or overhead IP cameras, simplifying cabling and ensuring continuous surveillance.

Enterprise Networks: Connect and power VoIP phones and desktop video conferencing terminals, improving office wiring clutter.

Wireless Network Coverage: Power wireless access points deployed in ceilings or hallways, achieving full Wi-Fi coverage.

Smart Homes and Buildings: Power IoT devices such as smart lighting, access control systems, POS terminals, and doorbells.

PoE switches are an indispensable component of modern network infrastructure. They seamlessly combine data transmission and power supply, making them an ideal choice for building efficient, flexible, and easy-to-maintain network systems. Whether deploying high-definition surveillance or building an enterprise-grade wireless network, choosing the right PoE switch is crucial to your network's success.
